Howdy all! Been away awhile as my computer up and died on me awhile back. I was the winner of the stock market closing contest and promised to report and provide photographic evidence of a successful hunt using my prizes won here. I shot my bird on Friday in the gale force winds. I struck him up with the waterproof box call won here and moved around the backside of a big ridge to the crest where I knew a logging road came to the top from the deep bottom (where I heard the gobbler). I put out a hen decoy in the logging road and hastily found the biggest tree I could to sit against. The tree was a poplar all of 8 inches in diameter ;D! Beggars can't be choosers. Over the next half hour I coaxed the bird up to the ridgetop with the fantastic slate call won in the contest. I had the Primos diaghram in, but never saw a need to use it, as the slate brought him close enough to spot my dummy. Once he did, I shutup and watched the show as I peered down the barrel of my cylinder choked muzzleloading shotgun. Patiently I watched as the Tom strutted up the logging road, spitting and drumming the whole way toward the deke. The blackpowder gun I used is a reliable killer to 20 yards. I was glad to be wearing my contest facemask as the bird never noticed me doing my impersonation of a skinny 8 inch poplar! Finally, I felt he was well in range and the smokepole sounded off under the windy conditions. The smoke cleared very quick at the shot and I was able to see the bird land flat on his back after recieving the shot. I later found quite a bit of his beard at 16 yards from my little poplar tree. He was beautiful with a 10 1/2" beard and 26 millimeter spurs. He weighed 22#, 13 oz. It was one of those hunts where everything went according to plan and I was/am very happy. Thanks again for all the prizes...they came in very handy. I am readying the fan and beard for the plaque too. The spurs are hanging from my rearview mirror. ;D Thanks again and good luck to all of you. Now, I have some overdue reading to do on here ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . Scroll on down for the promised pictures (thanks johnc911). Hoosier.

I have a good friend who has hunted the birds with a very old muzzy shotgun. I think that's a pretty neat way to go after them! I may have to try that sometime.

Congratulations hoosier! That is a fine bird. Your first with a ML? Is that a TC New Englander? My son told me the night before his hunt that he wanted to use my 10 bore. Without some practice it kind of hard to explain the sight picture needed as it shoots high. I did not have trouble with the smoke when I shot my bird, it was just that I was concentrating on the hold and aiming that the load felt like a dud. Steve

I was/am happy. I hope you and the grandson are doing well! BTW: My friend killed a nice old gobbler yesterday at 5pm. I was able to call 4 longbeards in range of his flintlock 20 gauge fowler for a killing shot. Keep after them in other words if you havent connected. Good luck, Hoosier.
