So there I was sitting 20' up a tree on a gorgeous evening. My handy dandy hunters watch told me that 6:00p.m. was going to be prime time. Deer were coming out into the other fields starting about 5:00. I was set up in a small finger woods that bordered a standing corn field. I was wanting to kill a doe I needed to give a friend and wasn't really expecting to kill a nice buck. Just a few minutes after 6 I heard deer walking in the corn. I looked North down the fence row and 2 adult does were closing the distance fast. Perfect I thought ! The first doe walked on a trail 14 yards from my tree not a clue of the impending danger lurking 20' above her...(insert dramatic music here ) I drew my Mathews settled in and promptly JERKED the release and shot under her !!! DANG IT ! She hopped a few steps and stopped and stood looking around not knowing what happened. I then noticed the other doe making a big circle in front of me and coming around to my right. I slowly got another arrow out and made ready to shoot the second doe. Unfortunately she walked out of range without presenting a shot. I suddenly became aware of the sound of a deer walking back along the fence row. Thinking it was the first doe coming back to see what had made the noise before, imagine my surprise when I looked and saw this guy SNIFFING the arrow I had shot at the Doe! lol I quickly draw and make sure I SQUEEZED the release, unfortunately I don't make sure I'm off of his shoulder when I SQUEEZE the release Shoulder hit, but I have confidence in my Muzzys...in case you all didn't know it. I look at my watch it's 6:10. I sit down and let the shakes calm down and start packing up. I ease out of the tree and unload all of my gear and some clothes before I start tracking. Walk over and look pick up the arrow I shot at the doe. And also find some blood at point of impact on the buck. The blood trail is not good. A few drops here and there. It's starting to get harder and harder to see and I've went over 200 yards from the stand. Man I thinkin I just knew I hit him good. I come to the edge of another corn field where the trail led me and hear a deer get up out of a drainage. A doe...surely not.....I trail right up to where she was standing. I didn't miss the doe and I was NOT trailing the buck ! The doe looked healthy and I surmised I had only shaved off some meat. She ran away flagging and looking very much like a healthy deer. So back to point of impact I went. Sure enough after some head scratching I found a second blood trail and after a short time as you can see what should have been a 10 minute recovery ended up being well over an hour. I'll have some better pictures tomorrow and some damage shots of what the Muzzy did to that shoulder. I'm interested myself. This is the exact reason I shoot those bad boys. I'm thinkin a lot of other broadheads would have had a different ending to this story.
