Last Wednesday the Central Indiana Chapter of Delta Waterfowl made another round of hen house installations in Central Indiana. We were very fortunate to forge a partnership with the Hamilton County Parks Department which allowed us to place some houses out this Spring, and provides some superb places for the years to come as well. We targeted Geist Park, which sits on the upper end of Geist Reservoir where Fall Creek forms the lake. Myself, Matt, John, Aaron, & Brent met up and installed 4 structures in the marsh areas of the park.
Chapter king-pin Scott was able to get permission granted for us to place our first hen houses within a State Park property and we left Geist and headed for Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park where we installed 5 structures there. The folks at Ft. Ben were awesome, and actually brought out one of their Kubota utility vehicles for use for driving our gear (and people) out to the ponds. That made for some much easier installing!!!
We also had members Matt Haase and John & Aaron Collins take a few hen houses back home with them where they are being installed in some marsh areas near their homes.
After all the pipes were welded, tubes rolled, posts pounded into the muck, and knuckles skinned from filing on the cut pipe we managed to get 30 hen houses into the ground for this Spring nesting season! It took a LOT of effort from a lot of people to make this happen. We didn't just order these things and they grew out of the muck on their own! Too many people were involved to thank, so if you were involved in any way I thank you! This stuff is hard work, it takes time, effort, and a commitment to this project for it to succeed. We've laid an outstanding framework for this project to prosper for as long as we have people willing to step up and help out.
Whether it's our Delta Chapter, or ANY organization I urge you guys to get involved somewhere. No, just 'joining' doesn't cut it... if you really want to make a difference for this sport we need everyone down in the muck, teaching kids, preserving our sport, attending banquets, helping with conservation projects. Paying $25 for a membership is a start, but it's hard-work that REALLY makes a difference. I ask you guys to join us at www.centralindianadeltawaterfowl.com or DU or Waterfowl USA and truly help keep the waterfowling sport healthy and alive.
