My beloved shotgun is officially on it's "last leg". I will be buying a new slug gun before the firearms season. I am up for suggestions as I don't know what to get. I want a lighterweight, accurate and reliable shotgun. I will be happy to shoot open sights, so, scope compatability is a non issue. Looking forward to any suggestions. Hoosier.

I'm partial to Remington 870s. Not sure if Ithaca is in business anymore or not , but they make a fine pump called Deerslayer II. It is a designated deer gun though, as the 870 can be interchanged (with a barrel change) to hunt anything with. I like the versatality of the 870..

Ithaca went out back in June. Too bad, they had great slug gun. Not knowing for sure what your requirements are, here are my thoughts: If you are content limiting your shots to say 80 - 100 yards, there are some really good "foster" style slugs on the market now days that give good accuracy from a smooth bore. You can buy a Remington 870 smooth bore with rifle sights for under $250 about anywhere. That being said, I think the best value in a slug gun is the Remington 870 Express Slug Gun that features a Heavy Wall 23" fully rifled barrel. It has only the provision for a scope so open sights are out of the question. But......that gun coupled with a quality sabot slug (like the Remington Core-Lokt and a couple others) makes reliable 200 yard performance a reality. I priced one the other day for ~$375. www.remington.com/firearms/shotguns/870exp_slug

The Remington 870 is a popular model and a good gun.

camby, I am willing to pay for quality. Then, I would suggest a Tar-Hunt Boltaction or a Browning Gold Deer Hunter either in 20 gauge or 12.

I have a Browning gold deer gun with a 2X7 leopold shotgun scope on it. I tried several slugs and wound up shooting BRI 3 inch standard velocity slugs into one ragged hole at 50 yards. I like the semi auto because of the softer recoil. You can send that 870 to tar hunt and they will make a dedicated deer gun out of it.

Whatever shotgun you decide on, try Lightfield slugs in it.

Would you consider a muzzleloader? It would extend you firearms season by a few weeks and many of the new inlines are actually good out to 250 yards. I would suggest the T/C Encore 209x50. With this gun if you did decide to shoot shotgun slugs you could buy a barrel for them. “Encore – The gun for all seasons” www.tcarms.com/TC_HTML/TC_Enc.htm

splash, I am already a black powder freak! I have several smokepoles but need a shotgun for our late-in-the-year deer "drives". I had an Encore for awhile and after piling up the deer with it I finally went back to sidelocks and round balls for a little more sport. Thanks just the same for your suggestion. Anyone else ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

I have a Winchester 1300 12ga with a fully rifled slug barrel and rifled sights. Very solid gun and it drives tacks even without a scope. I'd hate to see what it would do with a scope mounted on top. I own several Winchesters, never had a problem with any. I am back to hunting with my muzzleloader and/or pistol. But when I want a change I go right back to the 1300. Comes in a combo also. I'd like a have one in a 20ga with a fully rifled barrel.

I would love to have a Tar hunt....only me and $2500.00 are hard to part company ! I have a Marlin slugmaster which after a trigger job is a tack driver and I have an Encore that is just as accurate. They don't make the slugmasters anymore. My son's 20 guage 870 is very accurate also.

You absolutely can't beat the Remington 870 Express for value, durability, reliability, and versatility...in my opinion.
