My son and I have hunted every weekend since the last weekend of September. We both have been seeing lots of deer but just can't seem to close the deal.......but man, we are having a blast!
So far I have only seen one buck deer while on stand, and that was this Saturday morning and it was a small basket rack. I watched him rub two trees and make a half a**ed small scrape.
I really blew it on Saturday though, it was about 10:45am and my son had hit me on the radio saying he was getting down and heading to the ATV so I said I would meet him there. I came down and went to see what the small buck did, then came back to my tree and gathered up my climber and then trudged up the hill. Got on the trail and headed to the ATV's, rounded a bend in the trail and low and behold a nice young doe, standing right in the middle of the trail, just standing there looking at me.
I thought "no way"....so I lift my bow, pull an arrow out of the quiver, nock it, pull back....she hadn't moved an inch, I let it fly and the arrow goes right between her front legs!!!!!!!......I'M AMAZED! I can't beleive I missed, she was 13 yards at most!.....She jumps off the trail takes three steps and stops again! I pull another arrow out of the quiver, nock it, pull back, this time not as good of a shot due to some small branches......I don't know if that doe was just lucky or I am just UN LUCKY
Sunday morning I getting ready to climb out of a permenant stand, I un nock my arrow, turn to my left to grab my bow rope and see a white tail taking off up the hill!......Darn I never expected a deer to come from up there, then the blowing starts!
This deer I could not see was blowing and blowing....I thought anytime now my son would be comming down the trail on his ATV and she would run right to me. Then I see her......A BIG OLE MAMA! She is 25 yards broadside, while she was blowing I re nocked my arrow.....so I pull back and let er fly........THAWK!....she jumps and runs......OH YES I just know I got a good hit!
I wait till I can hear my son on his ATV....I hit him on the radio and tell him what happened......he meets me at my tree and I get down and go to where she was standing......we look for my arrow and or blood.....NOTHING......we look some more....NOTHING!....We do a circle looking and still cant find nothing but her tracks! Go back to where she was standing when I shot and there it was, MY ARROW FIRMLY PLANTED IN A ONE AND A HALF INCH TREE BRANCH!!!!!!....No way I could have hit that branch if I was trying, I never even seen it!
Is this why they call it hunting and not killing?
