Is it true that sandhills taste like eagle? Great photos, Trav. Great piece of property the DNR was able to save a couple of years ago. The next big issue will be Newport Army Depot. There is an opportunity to create a Fish & Wildlife Area there in the next year. Let's hope DNR can follow through again and get part of this for all the citizens of Indiana to enjoy.

Yep. The federal money coming to Indiana could be put to good use there.
Great pics Travis. Thanks for posting.

I agree guys..... GP is a slice of heaven, and the state should be taking advantage of any opportunities to keep and created areas like Newport for all to enjoy!
Actually Jack, I grilled some snowy owl the other night and I personally feel that a Sandhill tastes more like a snowy than an eagle.

Nice pictures. I live about 10 mins from the old homestead you have a pic of. I used to know the peoples name who lived there but can,t remember who they are. My Grandfather also has a farm about 2 miles south of there so I have been trompin that area since I was old enough to go alone. I love it out there I go all the time just to scout and hike ecspecially at this time of year.

So......I take it from your screen name that you have ties to the beehunter marsh section of GP??? I grew up in Lyons and my Grandfather still owns a farm about 1.5 south of the Beehunter Marsh. I used to hunt there alot before it became state ground, mainly for rabbits and we used to ride our bikes out and fish the ditch that runs thru the property. But anyway thats where I got my screen name from mainly because I spent most of my youth in the area. Now I live about 2 miles from the Goosepond section ;D so I didn't make it very far.

You're a lucky man to have grown up with that kind of waterfowl in your area! Beehunter area was very cool. You certainly don't feel like you are standing in Indiana........ North Dakota perhaps, but NOT Indiana!

Sandhill Cranes is the best fowl to eat. There is a reason they are called ribeye in the sky.
Great pics Travis. Did you see any mallards?

We had to reserves last year at GP. First one we went on a hammering mission. Shot our limit between thre of us. Second time we saw a ton of birs and only shot once, conditions were not right. But I do love the versitility the offer there and the areas you can hunt give you much more oppurtunity to try sometning differant. I willl always take the two hour drive down there once a year
