I am started to think about getting a gas log for my fireplace. Does anyone have an idea what it would cost me to have a gas line ran to the fireplace and hooked up? My house already has gas. Also, and recommendations on what kind to look for. I think I would want the vent free so that I can close my chimney up.

Hard to say with out looking is it built or prefab fireplace and can you get gas to it some of them you can't get to. Most of ours will run 350 to 500 just depends. I would not buy a vent-less they add tons of humidity to your home and IMHO you might as well unhook the flue from your furnace I know they have safety shut off if the CO gets to high but why take the chance. They make units that bring air in called sealed combustion by far the better unit and much cleaner safer and will run cheaper but they do cost more.

I would keep the chimney active. You just may need to pull that gas log in case you need to go to wood. If some disaster puts out your utilities for weeks you can always resort to wood for heat. I have a "REAL-FYRE" gas log made by the Robert H. Peterson company. It's very realistic and performs well. Most likely plumber would probably do the gas line. I know how to put black pipe together so I did my own. Your cost will depend how far the fireplace is from the gas line in the house and how accessible it will be for plumber to get to the side of fireplace as well as under the house. Hard to guess the price. If you go to a speciality store for the gas log they most likely offer install as well and wil do the gas line. I'm not sure if the big box home improvement stores do. Oh, make sure you get the right burner. They are different for LP and Natural Gas. Hope this helps
