Some of us got together yesterday morning for a hunt....and it was tough, but in many ways it was great to be amongst guys who have been with Art, hunted with Art, and laughed with Art. Our morning was filled with stories and jokes about him, and the ornery way he could be. The layout blind I brought for him was empty, but we all know that he was with us this morning.
I had made up my mind that the first flight of geese that came into our spread would get a pass, and we'd just count those as "Art's geese." Very fittingly, the first geese to appear yesterday were a pair that glided into our spread. There's no doubt that Art would have sweet talked them on in and finished them off with 2 shots.....or get 'em both with a single shot if the mood was right.
The pair circled over several times before moving on. The entire time I could hear Art yell, "KILL 'EM!!!!!" and I know he was kickin up dust at us for letting those two geese go on without a shot fired. Still though, it was a nice moment of reflection for all of us. I know I speak for everyone when I say that this news of his passing still hasn't sunk in..................
