My friends and I are in later planning stages of a North Dakota waterfowl trip. The place we are going to stay looks great and they offer a trailer of decoys and layout blinds to rent while you're there. All together, we have about 5 1/2 Dz gesse of different brands for the field and about 1/2dz duck field dekes. We are debating wether we should take our own or just rent the trailer as to avoid spending more money than we have to. Also, how many dekes are the norm out there in the Dakotas? Thanks Mike

When are you going? How many are going to be hunting? These few details will help to answer your question. Like you said you will save fuel on not having to pull your own equipment there, but I would want some photos of the "gear" that is being rented from the outfitter, because if it is complete junk, then I would bring my own, even though it would cost more in fuel to haul it. When you are going that far to hunt, you want the best experience you can get, and sometimes faulty or junky equipment can ruin it for you.

Yeah I would say that the 5 1/2 doz. dekes would be a bare bones minimum you would want to have to use, so you should be able to get it done with that number. Scouting, concealment with really dictate your success!! Weather will also have the largest determining factor then too! Wind is always good out there!!! Don't be afraid of sunny days if you have a good wind!! No wind and sunny will kill you! Escpecially if you have some frost going on also!! Good luck and hope you all have a great trip!!

I went to ND the 1st week of Novemebr this year. We had 2 truck/trailers with 31 doz. total dekes... There are TONS of birds out there at that time... Make sure you bring some snow goose dekes too!

Thanks for the advise. I think that we are going to take our own dekes with us. Hopefully by the time we go we will have about 7 or 8 dz. canadas, 1 dz. snows and 1 dz. full body mallards. This is what we are going to have to work with, wether it works or not, who knows, but I'm sure the trip will be fun anyhow. I have one other question, how much ammo and what size should we be prepared to take with us? I have been told to figure for about a case worth. Thanks

Yeah definitely a minimum of a case, and hey... you're not crossing the border into Canada, so there isn't any restrictions, so take plenty, that way if you need it you have it!! ;D I personally would take 3" BB's for everything, but 3" 2's would work well also.

Lots of guides out there use 3 dozen deek per hunter. I personally hate putting that many out since you have to pick them all up. If you are hunting for snows stay away from socks and cones or bags. 5-10 years ago they worked OK but last time we used them it was brutal. Most of our guys have full bodies. Mix some Blues and Specks in if you are going later in October or Nov. Have them send you a pic of their decoys. You can always mix in their decoys to your own spread. A dozen field ducks is fine and keep the robo off when the geese are flying and watch birds at shooting hour. Most of the time they are pintails. Also get a GPS preferably with topos. You will be able to mark hunting spots when scouting and don't hunt the roosts. Some of the hunters don't take kindly to that and may mess with your truck.
