Looks like twice stupid in one month... County man jailed for poaching deer
Times Leader Staff Report staff@timesleader.net Wednesday, December 03, 2008
Fish and Wildlife officers have arrested a county man for poaching deer and other offenses.
Josh Hudson, local officer for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, arrested 38-year-old C.J. Brummett of Mashburn-Ferguson Road on Thanksgiving Day.
The investigation began at about 9 p.m. Thursday. Hudson was on patrol on Mashburn-Ferguson Road when he heard five shots from a high-powered rifle.
After hearing the shots, he observed a vehicle shining a spotlight into a field.
Hudson approached the vehicle, a black 2003 Ford pickup, and spoke with its occupants, Brummett and a juvenile.
A deer that had been shot was soon discovered, and a .30-06 rifle and spotlights were recovered from the vehicle.
Hudson, who was assisted by Sheriff’s Deputy Boyd Bates and Fish and Wildlife Officer Daniel Richardson, obtained a search warrant for Brummett’s residence.
The search turned up a frozen bobcat and a John Deere emblem believed to be stolen.
Brummett was charged with two counts of illegal taking, one count of spotlighting, theft by unlawful taking under $300 and third-degree trespassing.
He was lodged in the county jail. It was his second run-in with Fish and Wildlife officers in November. On Nov. 14, Brummett was charged with three counts of illegal possession of deer antlers. The juvenile was charged with spotlighting and released. Further charges may be filed against Brummett.
