DNR is taking suggestions on proposed changes. My proposal will be making mute swans open season during any waterfowl season. Those critters need eradicated!
Here is the details from JackC in the legislative forum:
" Does the DNR need to change any rules?
You will get your chance in 2009 to suggest improvements for DNR regulations for hunting, fishing and trapping.
Statutes and rules have evolved over dozens of years and the DNR's Natural Resources Commission has decided that it is time for a comprehensive look at streamlining, simplifying and making all those regulations just plain better for the average person to understand.
Comments will be collected on a special webpage that the DNR will announce very soon. Public comment sessions will be held by the DNR Advisory Council later next year to prepare for rewriting some rules and even recommendations to change some legislation.
Conservation clubs and hunting and fishing groups are strongly urged to plan discussions in upcoming meetings to identify improvements that can be recommended to the DNR.
The Indiana Wildlife Federation (IWF) is grateful to the members of the Natural Reources Commission for launching this project to make Indiana outdoor experiences more rewarding."

It would have to be a very limited season on the greater sandhills. I think that would have to get the OK from the Mississippi Flyway Council. The mute swans are like Asian Carp, they are not supose to be here.

I don't see the sandhill season happening. There are a bunch of them around but they seem to be very clustered in a few areas. I think they would like the population to be more widespread before having a season.
I'd be all for the swan season though.

In NW.INDIANA there is a 5-6 county area that is the fall home to approx. 27,000+. The only problem is there is a very small group of WHOOPERS migrating with them. I could see a special hunt with a drawing for a resticted amount of tags.JUST A THOUGHT.

Not a bad idea... maybe a tag system like some states have for tundra swans.

Still not a state decision. That would be decided by the feds.

Bring on the mute season. They are big and tasty over hot coals!
