I took an 8-pointer the first Sunday of firearms season. I'm doing a european mount on it myself. It turned out really good!
Once I finished the process of the mount, I noticed the deer had been injured on the left side of his face. If you've ever seen or done one of these mounts they have nasal cavities below the eyes. On his right side it all looks fine but on his left side you can see where these cavities had been broke. Looking down its nose it looks like it's nose had been broke as well!
I've heard that a injury on one side may affect the antler growth opposite the side of the injury. The antler opposite the injured side is a light smaller, a little less mass!

I skinned out a small eight point in 96 that had a healed broken leg. When I skinned his head out he had a shattered tooth and skull damage. There was no sign of the injury outside. I now believe the deer was at least 2 and the injury about a year old. I think the small rack, which was slightly smaller opposite the damaged knee, was a result of the injury..

Here are pics of the euro mount. You can see in pic #1 his nose bridge is bent to the left or his right. He had a bad tooth on the side its bent towards as well. His right eye socket is kind of different on the injury side as well. I know he didn't do this after I shot him, he dropped right below me. The antler on his right is slightly smaller although it may not appear that way in the pic. This is the second euro mount I've done. The first one had no visible skull injury. Doing these yourself is really cool!

Pretty cool pictures. Can you give me some pointers on doing this kind of mount. I have a 8 point buck that I'm going to attempt myself. Thanks

Obviously start by skinning the head and cutting as much of the big meat off that you can. I used a saws-all to cut the lower jaw off. The saws-all came in handy for that!
I used my knife to cut the eyes out. Not as easy as you'd think! Once I did this I boiled the skull in water using my turkey fryer. Boiled it for maybe an hour to an hour and a half. I pulled it out occasionally to scrape, cut, pull with needle nose pliers and brush with wire brush the meat off the thing.
Dig the brain out of the thing during the boiling process. Use gloves when screwing with the brain matter. After you pull the bulk off the brain out there's a thin membrane surrounding the inside brain cavity wall, peel it off with the tip of your knife all the way around the inside of the cavity then use your needle nose pliers to pull the membrane out. There are small holes on the underside that lead to the brain cavity, removing this membrane will help you in removing the meat from these holes.
Continue to boil, scrape, cut and brush. Once you get all you can off, soak skull only in 50-50 peroxide and water for 4-6 hours. Pull and let dry.
