I have some problem coyotes on the land I deer hunt. For some reason I have never been able to call them in, they seem to be real call shy. So far this year i have seen coyotes 12 times while deer hunting. So I am thinking about trapping. What traps do I need, bait, and how do I do it??? Basically if I want to trap yotes I need a beginners course...LOL

yotes are the hardest to catch and hold of all Indiana furbearers. Way too much to cover in a single thread. May I suggest doing some research on www.trapperman.comEasy way to catch em is to learn how to snare, but dont do it where dogs roam freely unless ya know what yer doin. a 12 inch loop 12 inches above the ground on trails or set in fence crossings does the trick. To trap em, traps must be clean and odor free or they will just dig em up. Must also be bedded solid so they dont feel it move too. Also check out Lonnies site... lonnielphillips.proboards22.com/index.cgi

First get ya some traps. Preferrably #2 os mod w/ laminated jaws, d ring and swiveled chain. I like to cross stake using a butterfly swivel and two stakes, coyotes will not pull those out of the ground. Once you get new traps get some red devil drain cleaner and degrease the traps in boiling water, then wax you traps. I don't dye coyote traps, some people do. I figure they're under the dirt so they aren't gonna see them anyway. As for setting traps for coyote. Get a good DVD like Matt Jones or JC. Conner DVD and watch it, study it and watch it again. Scent is critical, appearence/eye appeal is critical. Good solid traps (USA. made like MB450 or 550), and stakes are key too.Minnesota Trapline products sells good stuff and has a website. Hoosier Trapper Supply right here in Indiana also sells traps and lures, urines and bait and provide quick service. Most times I order from Hoosier Trapper Supply the stuff ships the same day. Trappin coyote is a blast and very challenging. I actully catch more fox, red and grey than I do coyote....Coyote are tough. I'm still learning myself. Good Luck!

Have you tried different calls, and calling at night? When hunting predators, you must be just as cautious about scent and camouflage as when deer hunting, maybe more so!

Snares will rust from the inside out if boiled, as it removes all of the oil in them. Flat spray paint works better. $.02

I caught 2 coyotes this morning using snares in a fence row I knew they were going through. The only problem I had was they tore up the snares bad enough I don't think they are reusable.

That's petty common. Just cut off the reuseable hardware and make another one. Grats!

That's what I was going to try and do but didn't know what others have done about this problem. Thanks

How about getting some dog hunters out there. all the dog hunters are always looking for new places to hunt. All you have to do is ask. WE could put a big hurt on them right now.

Make sure your snares have swivels.

I always considered snares a one time deal anyway. Like said, save all the hardware for building future snares.

Ya, if you do get a snare that's not ruined, you're pretty lucky!
