Can anyone suggest a good website that explains how to take the lower off and clean the water intake on my Evinrude 9.9hp outboard? It got jambed into a sandbar on the white river during early duck and now it stops shooting water through the motor every once in a while. I think it has sand in it.
Or if anyone is close to Pittsboro I would be happy to bring it over if you will show me how to do it in person.
Thanks!!!

I was always able to do one of two things. Thin wire (breadbag tie/garbage bag tie) through the discharge hole or just take the cowling off the motor, pull off the tubing and clear it that way.
If that doesn't work you might try pushing water or air the opposite way if it is something wedged deep and can't be busted loose any other way. My experience was stuff getting clogged up right at the discharge and pretty easy to get loose. I don't beieve I have ever had sand but I did get a chunk of wood from hitting a log before, and various other garbage that floats around and somehow make it into my motor.

Do what duff said. Start up top and work your way down. Its easier. Your clog might be right at the discharge tube. Also, if you can "blow" into the discharge tube and hear air coming out, your clear. However, if its clear and your still not getting water out the tell tale, then your impellar blades have detiorated. This could be due to sitting for a while not being used (years worth), constant contact with sandy water. The impellar blades are a hard rubber. Again, start up top and work your way down. More than likely if its a new motor, then your tell tale is clogged at the discharge. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I have had mine stop shooting water due to the river being low and getting sand in it. I keep a paper clip in the boat. If it stops spitting water, i raise the motor and run the paper clip into the discharge hole, this has worked as a good temporary fix so i don't burn the motor up.

If you see the discharge that's above water not exhausting water you may or may not have an overheating problem in the making. Most water is exhausted below water line with the exhaust, the one that you can see is just an "indicator" so you know when you're pumping properly. Pretty easy to plug the indicator, not so easy to plug the cooling system.

if you want to buy another one run it without water coming out of the pee hole
as said before, pull the cowling, pull the hose off the pee hole fitting and blow backwards thru it.... then check the fitting itself to make sure its clear....
if your running in sandy conditions you need a new pump before each season....
you should have a steady "unbroken" stream coming out of the pee hole.... if it spurts you probably have a broken fin on the impeller or one/two of the fins have developed a memory and its losing pressure for just a second on each revolution.....
the only reason to run one with little to no water coming out is to get you closer to the truck before it overheats and shuts down or locks up completely...
you can change it yourself in an hour or less with a socket set and a open end wrench.....
