I have a 12 year old son that is yearning to learn how to hunt. Are there places that you can take your child that can teach kids the correct way to hunt? I know that it's usually the dads that teach their kids but we have no one in our family that hunts. If anyone can give me any suggestions on what I should do, it would be greatly appreciated. Too bad there wasn't a youth mentoring program.
Thanks so much!

Get on that hunter education card right away.
From the kids I see today that is the one single thing keeping kids who want to hunt and learn to hunt kids from actually participating in hunting today.
It's a beuraucratic red tape piece of legislation that most kids under 16 have absolutly no possiblility of negotiating on their own.

That's exactly why the apprentice license was developed jackryan. I believe jackc99 played a part in getting that license in place. Hunter's Ed is a good place to start though- get him (and you!) in a class. Make friends with as many in the class as possible and you'll get some good starts there.

Is your son in Boy Scouts or 4-H? Both of those groups have and teach proper weapon handling is the one of the basics of hunting. Also in both of those groups you will find other adults that hunt and that would be, I'm sure, more than willing to take your son hunting and "show the ropes". After all the people that teach those programs are doing it for the kids to start with. As a side note the Venturing Program in Boys Scouts is the only section of Boy Scouts that allows actual hunting to be taught however, Venturers have to be at least 14 or through 8th grade, so your son would have a couple more years before you could try that approach. If you would happen to be in the Lafayette area send me a PM and I'm sure that between me and a few others I know we could get you and him started with something. I learned with squirrel hunting and went from there.

Are there any shooting clubs near you? Those might be a good place to start. Some clubs will offer basic safety and Marksmanship.
