Pheasant hunting partnerships ---------------------------------------------- Three Indiana Pheasants Forever chapters have joined the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to offer opening-day hunts at three Game Bird Habitat Areas.
Game Bird Habitat Areas are tracts of land leased by the state for hunting in northwest Indiana's prime pheasant range. The tracts are managed specifically for ring-necked pheasant.
Chapters will either raffle or auction the hunts at their annual membership banquets. Proceeds will fund DNR hunter recruitment and retention efforts. Each chapter will also conduct a youth hunt or other hunter recruitment and retention program at a Division of Fish and Wildlife property.
Last year the DNR received more than 5,200 applications for about 250 hunting opportunities offered in the annual Game Bird Habitat hunt drawing.
Since1986, hunters have harvested more than 12,500 pheasants on the managed areas. This year, tracts in Benton, Jasper, Newton and White counties will be open for reserved hunts in November and December. The 2008 drawing application deadline was Sept. 19.
Pheasants Forever is a national conservation organization that operates through local chapters. Members help pheasants and other wildlife by creating habitat, restoring wetlands and protecting prairies.
