I know it is a bit early to be discussing the rut, but I got my latest issue of Deer and Deer Hunting and in it there was an article about the 2008 Rut. It showed a graph for both the north and south of the country and broke each graph into three categories. One for the Seeking stage, one for the Chasing and one for the Breeding. It showed November 17th and 18th being the peak time for the chasing stage. I guess they run this article every year so I was wondering if anyone has looked at this graph before in previous issues and evaluated whether is was close or not?

I am trying to plan some vacation time during hunting season and would love to hit the peak of the rut as close as possible, so that is why I was wondering.

The rut is right around the same time every year. If I was planning vacation for deer hunting then I try for the last few days of Oct. and as far in to November as I could get. But I am also primarily a bow hunter and I prefer to be out there with my bow before the trigger happy people on the next property shoot everything that moves.

If I was only limited to hunt only 5 days a year those 5 days would be the 5th-9th of November. Every year!

Hoosier Hunter I have to agree with you on that. I have seen more bucks moving right around the 7th of November than I have any other time..... but the movement actually starts to pick up at the end of October.

Nov. 3-9th for mature buck sightings, hours between 11am and 3pm besides first and last light if you are lucky.

Two years running I have seen a lot of buck activity around the 4th, 5th, & 6th. I did not know D&D Hunting published a chart. The 17th & 18th seems really late to me!

I notice it usually is good from the week of Halloween until slug opener. The first 10 days of Nov are probably what I have noticed to be the ultimate prime time.

The week prior to Halloween is not usually that good. But activity usually picks up significantly as each day goes by after Halloween. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Well you guys have pretty much changed my mind about taking the week of Thanksgiving off and moving it up to the first full week of November (3rd through the 7th). Including the weekend before and after hopefully I can get me a nice buck. I have seen a few smaller bucks on the land I hunt but the guy who owns it told me he saw a really nice 10 or 12 a few times. I see does all the time when I am out there fishing, so this might be the year I hit the rut just right.

I have taken the 2nd week of Nov off for years and it hasnt failed me yet. As far as chasing and rutting activity goes. A lot of people mistake the chasing period as the peak of the rut.
I will say Thanksgiving morning almost EVERY one has given me at least a sighting of a big buck. Some years since the...dare I mention it...the OBR... the buck I've seen is bigger than the one I have already tagged. By this time a lot of does have been bred and the big boys are out looking again.
