1) I was told that orange stripes are used on trees in (at least) Morgan Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests to mark boundaries. Is there a picture of these stripes I can see to know what they look like? Reason: last Saturday, I was very thoroughly lost and came to an area where I thought I saw the indicated markers. However, at that time I was trying to get unlost so staying within forest boundaries was not high on my priority list so, a bit later, I saw more of the markers. And then more of them. And then more. This led me to wonder if they were truly "boundary marks" or not.
2) I was told to keep a "safety zone" of 200 ft around lakes, roads, and trails (as well as the designated "safety zone" on the map). What constitutes a "trail" for this purpose? I presume the designated, mapped, hiking trails are included, but what about fire trails? There were two on the map in the general area where I was but while I was trying to hike out from being lost, I came across a number of "trails" in which a tracked vehicle (probably a bulldozer) basically forced its way through.
3) (more curiosity than anything on this one) I saw footprints of a cat-type critter--four toe pads in front of a large "palm" pad with no claw marks indicating retractile claws. However, these prints were 1 1/2 to 2" across. What could have possibly left those tracks?

You need to contact an officer in District 6 for the MM state forest questions. 812--837-9536
A bobcat is most likely the critter who left those tracks.
