I did a little Pheasant/Quail hunting as a kid, but now in my 40's and 12 yr old son & I are ready to get going. Did hunter safety again w/him and have been shooting clays weekly w/our new shotguns. (500/20ga & 870/12ga) Now want/need to know how to get connected. Don't know a lot of hunters or land owners here to get started in the right way. Want to make sure son has a good start to a great future of hunting together. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. (Elkhart County) jdklvans@msn.com

Welcome to the site. You'll develop a life time of memories with your son. I started my Son hunting when he was 12. His 14 now and is a teenager ... seems we still can agree on hunting and he even looks forward to spending time with the old man in the woods. I can't think of a better way to spend time with your kids than hunting. Just remember it is not what you bag but the time you spend together (but you know that already as a Dad). I still remember our first hunt ... Wilbur Wright FWA for opening Day Deer (what a mistake). But we had a blast at the Bob Evans ... the boy drank 3 Hot Chocolates he was so cold. Anyways post your questions and you'll get very good advice.

Welcome, I would suggest starting with squirrels. You won,t find quail or pheasants in any huntable populations in this part of the state. They have been gone since the early 70's. Turkey and rabbits have been making a steady comeback though, seeing more and more every year. Deer are everywhere. As far as finding someplace to hunt try to get your foot in the door squirrel hunting and it may lead to other game. One suggestion is to take your son with you when trying to get permission to hunt and tell the landowner it will only be the two of you. Good luck

Where are you located?
I bet someone on here lives close to you and maybe would be willing to take you out on a hunt or two...
Just a thought.
