HAS ANYONE EVER USED BALES OF BARLEY STRAW FOR WEED CONTROL IN A POND?

I have never personally used it but a friend of mine says it works great.

Barley straw doesn't as much for weed control as is does for algae control. It works well for blue/green algae. That stringy, slimy stuff that forms around the shallow areas. It works really well in water gardens, where there is a constant current flowing over the straw. In a stagnant pond, it is limited to the immediate area where the bale is placed.

Not to mention it takes a LOT in a normal sized pond to control the algae.
In a decorative gold-fish type of pond barley can be effective though.

East Fork State Fish Hatchery at Glendale uses it. I worked there two summers during summer breaks from college. The ponds never had algae, weeds, or moss on them. We put out about a bale and a half (square bales) per acre.
