Dont know if this has been brought up before but just out of curiosity what does everyone think about it. I know I could care less if someone is spotlighting or not. It is a very good tool for seeing what is on your properties. And no matter what anyone says it does not effect deer. They wont run out of the county because you spot lighted them. The next night they will be in the same spot more than likely and most of the time if you go by later they will be right back. A lot of times they dont even run off to begin with. I have seen this asked on other sites lately and it has been bashed by many where it is not legal in their state to do it. Just wondering what folks from Indiana where it is legal think??

I don't see anything wrong with spotlighting deer either, as long as you are just shining deer. I have heard complaints of where some folks get their houses lit up, I think thats rude!
But I also think some folks make up wild stories because they don't want "THEIR" deer all to themselves.

I dont have a real storng opinion either way. My only statement I guess is It brings questions to my mind when I see someone doing it on property other than their own.
For several years in a row I've seen someone spotlighhting before opening morning of gun season as my son and I are getting ready to walk in, That makes me think poacher...

I enjoy doing it.I would go more often if gas wasn't so high...I mostly shine the places I hunt and some HNF around Orange county.

I might do it once or twice a year, wouldn't bother me to see it go away, like Kentucky.

I see nothing wrong with spotlighting ..... some spot-lighters are another story though.
If I knew an area I hunted was the preferred holding area of a mature buck I wouldn't spotlight it much, if at all. Mature deer dont get old by being stupid .... they know exactly what a spotlight is and what is behind it. "no matter what anyone says" .... they know.

I used to enjoy doing it after work when I worked 2nd, but I would never think about it next to a house. That's just inconsiderate.

It is fun, but a few spoil it for everyone.
I think that a compromise could be made it that spotlighting is OK, but no lighting up houes, outbuildings and live stock. Plus all spotlighting needs to stop at a certain hour - maybe 11 PM?

While I don't spotlight I do not really see anything against it other than those that shine up others personal property. Then again I see nothing wrong with placing restrictions on when it could be done. Befor 12 midnight and none from Oct 1 thru Jan 15.

A Conservation Police Officer from Illinois told me that he and his partner used to go out and shine deer when checking for locations to look for poachers. If the deer immediately ran off it was likely they'd been shot at by shiners before and was therefore a good place to set up surveillance. If the deer stood and simply looked back it meant they probably hadn't been shot at (or maybe just stupid) and the CPOs were wasting their time in that area. I thought it was a pretty interesting observation.

I would support a ban on spotlighting.

I would oppose an outright ban on spotlighting, but I think some restrictions would help catch poachers, such as no spotlighting after midnight. I'd guess most poachers are gonna take a crack in the wee hours thinking everyone is asleep and nobody will hear the shot. By moving the time allowed to midnight, if an ICO or anyone sees shinning they can report it and nail the offender.

I was always running home around 1130-12 when I was 2nd shift. I've never gone out with only the purpose of spotlighting. Since I don't work 2nds anymore I don't do it.

I find it to be very fun as well, and it gives you a idea of what type deer are in the area, plus it gets you fired up when you get to see some big boys. My wife loves to go with me, but i would'nt like it if someone lit my house up, i think you have to be smart about it, and respect people's property as well?

I like it, i was told by the Pigeon river co's to do it on there property a couple hours before light and see if you can find a good buck and try and hunt him. Of coarse they said to not have weapons in the truck. My buddy lives close by. There is no reason to ban it or put restrictions on it because of a few. If thats the case then ban alcohal for drunk drivers

I don't like the idea of a time restriction, because there are plenty of people who work at all hours of the day and night and they may not be able to get out and do any spotlighting until 2 or 3 in the morning. We should not restrict them just because they are only able to get out at certain times. I like to go out and spotlight for deer and the rest of my family enjoys it as well.

It's a good time just cruising around seeing what's out there. Sometimes you wouldn't believe what you see. I don't support a time restriction, I work 2nd shift and I like to shine some feilds on the way home. Besides even if you would restrict,or put a ban on it, the same people that are shining houses and poaching now are gonna be the same ones that do it after the restrictions/bans. It's a harmless good time.

They are already breaking the law what do they care??? They are going to poach and always will. We dont have enough CO's let alone law enforcement in the state to keep up with it.

I've never really done it, other than angling the truck headlights when I see one cross the road or see eyes. My cousins used to hunt up around Wellston , MI. Up there, EVERYBODY spotlights! I've seen 5 vehicles shining the same field at the same time. They love it.
