Hello, I bought some Shot Plot today and plan to get started planting in a few days . The directions do not call for any prep work with a herbacide to remove weeds. Sounds to good to be true. Do I just mow and plow and follow the instructions on the package or do I need to spray first? Thanks for the previous help Indybrad and Hornharvester any further aid will be appreciated .

You should be getting it planted soon. Since you started kind of late I would mow, plow, disc and sow it. Make sure you use a minimum of 200 lbs to the acre of fertilizer and 300 lbs is even better. Right now 12-12-12 is 10.99 for a 40 lbs. bag at TSC. With out fertilizer the plants don't attract deer very good. Its kind of like eating a puny apple compared to a nice juicy one. h.h.

Where are you getting fertilizer for that price!! I am a farmer and that is about half of what I paid. That only works out to $545.00 per ton.

Tractor Supply Company. I checked on it last week and that was the price. Walmart price was 11.99 for the same 12-12-12. h.h.

When I plant it I just broadcast it and roll it. Or you could use a harrow or piece of chain link fence to cover the seed a little. I don't have as much experience as these other guys, but it worked last year. I also used 200lbs of fert. and 250lbs of pellitized lime and tilled into the dirt.

Hopefully in the next two days it will rain. If it doesnt soon my plots wont be worth a darn this year.

Triple 12 fertilizer went up at TSC to 18.99 a bag for 40 lbs. Dumb me didn't buy any like schall53 advised. With high gas and fertilizer prices most likely this will be my last year for planting food plots. h.h.

Finally got out to the property and checked my Shot Plot food plots. I forgot to take my camera but I can report that they are looking pretty good . They are not as thick as I hoped they would be but I think that will come with the added rain that we recieved .

glad to hear it. If we would have had some more rain I think your plot would have been more lush. I checked mine 2 weeks ago and it wasn't looking good. Going to check it again on Sat. I too hope the rain helped.

I checked mine yesterday and its not looking to good. The 4-5 weeks with no rain took its toll. The wheat and clover I planted two weeks ago looks decent. h.h.

Heck , maybe mine isn't as good as I think, I don't have anything to compare it to. It's an accomplishment for me to have anything green come up. I would starve if I had to farm for a living.

That is hillarious. That's is exactly how I felt last year. Here's a pic of mine last year. This years plot didn't look at all like that 2 weeks ago.

it is my understanding that the turnips produce a fungus that makes it hard to grow a healthy food plot in the same place the next year......i found this to be true as when we first planted shotplot it was awesome and the deer loved it but the next year hardly anything grew

I've heard that also. I'm going to rotate mine every year. After the couple rains we had and the cool nights, mine really poped up this year. Had 17 does and fawns, and one dink buck in mine opening weekend of archery

I'm sure there must be something? so all turnips growers only grow crops on a section of land every other year? I'm doudting that anyone know for sure if you can put something on the help this?
