i am going to start doing my own processing this year, need to get a meat grinder! not sure what to get i would like to get a Hobart but don't have the cash for that what does every one use and what works best? i am sort of looking at a hand crank "style" but putting a pulley on it and hooking up 1/2hp motor to it years ago i tried the little oster style grinders and they just didn't work

I have one from Gander Mountain that cost about $100 and it does a great job. I have had it about 4 years and it works wonderful. Very simple and easy to clean. I can do 2-3 deer at a time with it no problems. The limiting factor is not how fast the grinder can grind but how fast we can supply it with meat chunks! Now granted, it is not professional quality but I would not hesitate to reccomend it to someone just cutting up a few deer at home every year. Here is the one that I have: www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_95313____SearchResults

lkrus, don't know how much you have to spend but check out this site, www.lemproducts.com/They have some very good products and basspro does sell them. I bought the #5 stainless grinder and I believe it will be around long after I'm gone. I cannot keep meat fed to it quick enough to slow it down. Usually in the summertime basspro will put their food processing equipment on sale. As far as hooking a hand crank style to a belt pulley setup, I dunno but I would think that might wear it out quickly as I do not believe most of those hand crank type units would handle the heat & wear from the higher / constant RPM's. YMMV

Depends on how fast you want to grind. Grinders are priced from 100.00 - 600.00. Most of the smaller ones come with a #12 head and get larger as you increase HP rating. A 1HP will have a #22 or #32 head. The larger heads let you grind larger pieces of meat. LEM are good grinders and sold at most all the outdoor stores like Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander, Sportsman's Warehouse. If you are planning on making a lot of hamburger take a look at the bagging kit that attachés to the grind so you can grind right into a 1 lb plastic bag, use a tape machine and your done. Here are some good sites that sell products to the home butcher. www.alliedkenco.comwww.butcher-packer.com

I got tired of using one of those small non-metal gear grinders my Dad has and went and bought a #8 Lem 1/3 hp grinder and it does a great job. I think it was $230 at Bass Pro and regular price was $259. Believe me you will not regret spending a little more.

Rural King stocks some nice meat grinders for home butchering. The bigger ones are best.

Another option is the normal #8 hand crank grinder that you can pick up just about anywhere (Walmart usually has them....) and a while back (haven't looked in a while) Cabelas had the drill adaptors for those grinders in the Bargain Cave for $15. The grinder usually will run $20 or less, so for $40-45 with shipping you should have a decent grinder. I bought one of the adaptors and fully intend to try it out this year.

Best one is the neighbors or buddy who you can drop it off and pick it up later!!!
I bought one last year from BPS up north. I was grinding goose breast and the dang nylon gear stipped, now I know why they had spares in the box. If I get another it will most certainly have the metal gears.

I just received this one and it looks like it's gonna do the job. I've been going over to my buddies and using his, but I figured it was time to get my own. Not sure why , but when I went to the online store, I noticed it was $10 more than the catalog price. Order it online by the summer catalog number and you'll save another $10. This one has more power and looks to be of better quality than the similarly priced one at GM.
