What if you opened the latest catalog from one of the giant outdoors products supply houses and there were no tree stands in it? What if you went into a big outdoor store and couldn't buy a tree stand? What if you went to the latest hunting show and there were no tree stands to be had? What if, just what if, tree stands were illegal to manufacture or sell?
Never happen, you say? Have you tried to buy a three-wheeler lately?
Watchdogs like the Consumer Protection Agency look at things that they may think are unsafe. And sometimes those things are unsafe. Sometimes it is just the way they are used that is unsafe. And sometimes those things they look at don't get made and sold anymore.
To safeguard the sale and use of tree stands, hunters need to be...well, safer. They need to work to cut down on the number of accidents. Heck, that makes good sense. And the best way to do that is by using a 4-point fall restraint system, a harness, if you will.
There is no question the 4-point harness is the best and safest of all the fall restraint systems. They work. Period. But they only work if we use them. And that means using them all the time, not just after we climb into the stands. Most accidents happen while climbing in and out of the stand. So that belt needs to be in use then and all the time we are off the ground. There is nothing macho about not wearing one. There is a word for that. It is called stupidity.
Buy one. Use it every time you use a tree stand, even a ladder stand. Reduce the accidents and injuries and even deaths and sooner or later, somebody is going to invent an even better stand. And we can buy one. Don't buy one, don't use one and you can just about bet tree stands may go the way of the three-wheeler.
Think it can't happen? Try and buy a three-wheeler!
