Game Bird Habitat Area reserved pheasant hunts
Mail-in application due Sept. 19
Online application deadline, Oct. 3
The DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife offers reserved hunts by random drawing on Game Bird Habitat Areas in northern Indiana.
Hunters can apply for the pheasant hunts by completing the 2008 Pheasant Hunt application in the 2008-09 Indiana Hunting and Trapping Guide, or they may apply online after July 1 at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov
All applicants will be notified of the drawing results by mail. Successful applicants may bring up to two hunting partners.
Game Bird Habitat Areas are managed specifically for ring-necked pheasant. Since 1986, hunters have harvested more than 12,500 pheasants on the managed areas. This year, tracts in Jasper, Benton, Newton and White counties will be open for hunting. The dates for the special hunts are Nov. 7, 8, 12, 15, 19, 23, and Dec. 6, 13, and 20.
For the 15th year, a one-day pheasant youth hunt has been reserved for youth hunters under the age of 18. The youth pheasant hunt is Nov. 28.
To apply, complete the Pheasant Hunt application in the 2008-09 Indiana Hunting and Trapping Guide, and mark the Youth Hunt box for Nov. 28.
Youth hunters applying for the youth hunt date may not apply for regular hunt dates. Successfully drawn youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult and may invite one other hunting companion.
These Game Bird Habitat Area reserved pheasant hunts are not put-and-take hunts. Hunters can register for DNR put-and-take hunts online after Sept. 1. Stay tuned to Wild Bulletin (www.wildife.in.gov) for put-and-take hunt application updates.

I hunted in White County last year on one of these areas. It was full of birds even in mid-December. Great program. Wish we had more areas.

How crowded was it Jack? The put-n-take hunt here at Huntington was a sea of orange when I drove through there during the hunt.

If you hit the pheasant lottery, you have the whole place to yourself and two friends. Great hunting.

We (my son and I) applied for the game bird hunts this year, I have never been drawn but my son has been drawn twice for the youth hunt.
We only went to the first hunt, the second time he was drawn it conflicted with deer hunting and that is his first choice.
The pheasant youth hunts are a little different than most other youth hunts......the youths hunt last here.
The time we went, we seen tons of hens and killed the only two males we seen.

Camby, were you allowed to hunt with your Son or does the person a youth bring have to be a youth?

Youth hunt is for youth only...and it's not the last hunt of the season, Camby.

I've been drawn once in 25 years but have lots of friends who did get drawn so I go on one of these about once every 3 or 4 years. Been 7 times.

Well last year I actually got permission to at least coyote hunt out at the Pine Creek area. 800 acres of prime bird ground. Ended up with 3 yotes and a couple of red fox. Hopefully I've saved a couple of birds for somebody. Drive by two of the place about twice a week and have seen real good #'s coming out of the road ditches, so it should be another good year for DNR ground.

Haven't heard of it, but my guess is it's up toward Willow slough outside of Morocco right off of US 41.
