Greenfield, IN – Teaching kids how to safely shoot and handle a firearm might not be as popular of a summertime activity as baseball or soccer, but for dozens of local kids there’s nothing they would rather be doing. The 4-H Shooting Sports program has passed on the knowledge of firearms safety and marksmanship to over 300,000 children across the country. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics.
When the Central Indiana Chapter of Delta Waterfowl learned that the Hancock County 4-H program did not have a muzzleloader for the kids to use, they came to their aid. Through subscription sales of Indiana Conservation Afield magazine, the chapter was able to earn a .50 caliber muzzleloader which it donated to the 4-H group on April 29th. The Central Indiana Chapter of Delta Waterfowl or CICDW is in its first year of existence and along with waterfowl conservation, it places youth as a top priority. “As far as I’m concerned, one of the main things we can do as a chapter is support our youth” says chapter President Scott Johnson. Along with the muzzleloader donation, the Delta Waterfowl chapter is also in charge of the first ever youth waterfowl hunt to take place this Fall at Province Pond Waterfowl Conservation Area near New Castle. The CICDW has already made a huge splash at Province Pond WCA by teaming up with Dept. of Natural Resources in helping them maintain and manage the property. Chapter member John Collins believes that keeping kids on the shooting range, and in the woods will translate in better scholastic achievement and more productive citizens later in life. “Through programs like 4-H Shooting Sports and Delta Waterfowl, the mission of keeping kids in the outdoors and out of trouble is on a solid foundation,” said Collins.
