Today was the first morning I could get out for a turkey hunt. Last weekend my son passed on the youth hunt, he said he just couldn't get motivated (girls I think).
This morning however we did hunt, we went to our spot on Meadow Church Rd in Lawrence County. Got there about 5:15am and was in the woods by 5:30. No birds were chirping yet so we made our way in a bit found a log and waited for the gobble to start. We weren't sitting there 2 minutes and one cracks off, sounds like it's maybe 150 yards to our left. My son says he is setting up here, so I move on. I get all the way back to the "Y" and hear two going off, so I set up.
I start talking to one gobbler that seems to be getting closer, but it's comming from my rear, this goes on for about 20 minutes. My decoys are set up on a logging trail and I'm up a small hill. I look down at my decoys and I see movement passed them, I think TURKEY!
I see the movement again......it's not a turkey it's a coyote! This dog is stalking my decoys, he is taking about one step every couple seconds and he is hunched down. My gun is already up on my knee because I thought the turkey I was chatting with was gonna show. The coyote pops out in a little open area and I let him have it! 25 yards with a 3 inch turkey load, and he rolls.
Never heard a gobble after i shot the dog. About an hour and a half later my son hits me on the radio and says he wants to see the coyote, so he comes to where I was. We look at the coyote and start heading back to his set up.
When we get to his set up, I see movement again about 40 yards passed his decoys. At first I thought it was a deer, but on a closer look it's another stinking coyote!
Couldn't get a shot on him as he took off up the hill about the time when I pull up!
So anyway we will be back at it in the morning!
