Well, my hunting buddy couldn't come this morning so I sat out on my own for the first morning hunt I have had a chance at this year.
The weather was pretty nasty in Metamora this morning. I got a little wet and then I got a lot cold in that chilly wind.
We had gone down last Sunday morning before church to listen for gobbling and they were gobbling their fool heads off for 2 solid hours. I went to that area this morning before light...I never heard a gobble all day. Frustrated!
I decided, since I was getting wet, cold, and the turkeys had taken a vow of silence, that I would head for a ground blind in the alfalfa field. As I was walking through the power line cut, I saw a hen about 300 yards away, she saw me too, and took off...frustrated!
I got to my blind and sat and shivered and saw nothing but two bird dogs loose and running all over the field. I thought about shooting them, but I just couldn't do it, they were nice looking dogs. I managed to run them off, but they really stirred up the area for a while...frustrated!
I started dozing off and thought about packing it in, but I decided I would stick it out until at least 10:00. At 9:30 I saw a turkey running through a finger of the field toward me and then into a little strip of woods between that finger and my blind. I was sure it was a male bird because of all the red on his head. I yelped softly 4 times and I saw him turn and come to the field's edge to investigate. I knew I didn't have long, because he was moving quickly (I also didn't have a decoy out so he didn't see what was yelping). I had to lean way over to take the shot and I dropped him. When I shot, I saw another bird take off that was with him that I hadn't even seen.
Long story short, it was a Jake...15 pounds, 4.5 inch beard. He is simmering in a crock pot as I type awaiting some of my wife's homemade noodles and mashed potatoes.
