First of all, Let me start by saying I got a phone call last nite from the landowner that we hunt on; saying he had gave another hunter permission to hunt.So after we a had killed one bird this past weekend in the youth season, we had scouted for the past few days and had another bird picked out. The other hunter knew we were hunting opening day but proceeded in hunting it anyway. Not to mention it is only about 30 acres. So we got there at around 530am. Owl hooted and sure enough there he was. right where we thought he was. so we started up the hill side to get closer. as soon as we topped the hill. there sat the another guy.( i was like "are you sh**in' me" so we started across to the other ridge. while on our way , we bumped two off the roost. (could this day get any worse)It was breaking daylight and we had to do something. so we sat down in between two ridges and a corn field. then they started gobblin' . there was in fact some birds that were up from us a little ways. We had done a big circle and had gottin' away from the another guy. we just sat still and didn't hardly call. the other guy was callin' quite a bit. and we didn't want to call to much.well it paid off , a hen came right in to us (about 10 yrds).following her was 2 jakes and a tom. the tom was stuttin' but the only one I could get in the scope I shot. It was a jake. he dropped and the other bird ran down the ridge and the other hunter shot it.This is the second jake I have shot in the 7 years I have hunted. But you know what I am very proud of my jake. Am I disappointed that I didn't get the tom? No. I got a turkey period! My jake had a 4 1/2 beard, weighed 16 lbs and had 5mm spurs.oh and to end my story on a funny note, I have a big "goose egg" above my eye from scope damage.Funny .kinda hurt though.but it started out bad and ended on a happy note.
