My vote is for the Garmin etrex series. They are small, well laid out and very easy to use. Garmin makes several models of etrex. I like a model that has a compass view on it.

I've never used one, but I'm leary of putting too much trust in anything electronic. Is the compass as accurate as a regular compass?

I've had the Etrex Vista CX for the last 2 years & am happy with it. I think it ran me around $300 & has saved my backside more than once when I got turned around in the woods. I'm not as familiar with all the fancy things it can do as I should be, but I do know that I can set a way point - normally my house or my truck- and no matter where I wander to from there, it always points me back to where I want to go..... I did have to buy a Midwest topo chip for it though, but it's well worth it.
Good luck & don't get lost

I'll put a vote in for the Garmin Etrex as well I LOVE my GPS. Is a map and compas better? you bet, but a GPS with a map and or compas is unbeliveable IMO I will offer these wornings don't lay something the size of a backpack in the woods mark it and expect to find it in the dark, these things are not that acurate #2 DO NOT by any means buy the downloads for Topo for a hand heald it is absolutely worthless you'll do better spending money on a GOOD map or two.
