Slate by far but Glass is growing on me. I tried a copper call recently and it sounded great as well. Heck I love friction calls. Aluminum can be pretty high pitched but, in the right circumstance, it's useful!

Slate all the way baby! I've got a Cody that I wouldn't part with for the life of me. Glass is good too. But there is just something about slate that I like. I'm not a fan though of the man made creations like "Frictionite" or "Crystal", etc. Just seem cheap to me. I'd actually be interested in buying a glass over slate from you LawrenceCoBowhunter. I was looking at your calls yesterday and they look dang nice.

I like them all ! But really depends on the situation and what I feel like pulling out of my vest. I can't make up my mind so I carry them all !

I think slate sounds the best. I do have a primos with frictionite that sounds pertty good also.

Slate for me for fairly close (less than 100 yards).
I use a MADD Super Aluminator to fire them up at extended distances.

I rank slate and handsanded double strength glass as the best and most reliable of surfaces. Double strength crystal is a close runner-up. I use the same hand turned hickory strikers on all three. Bead blasted glass is good but lacks the suttle sing of hand roughed glass.
I make a two sided call(bead blasted glass on major side and slate on minor side) that is a good compromise. It will also play laying on the ground.
I make metal surface calls for customers that insist on them but don't recommend them because they are unreliable for consistant sound in changing conditions and hard strikers tend to skate on them at times.

Stick with alcohol for cleaning that aluminum surface.

Could be that your striker is the problem-either too hard or the end is impregnated with foreign material. I clean my glass with scotch brite pads after the initial sanding. Could also be oils from your hands--clean with alcohol. Good luck.

I voted Beaded Glass - I hope this is the same as a sand blasted crystal.
I have made several pots with the crystal on one side and slate on the other. For me the slate by far is the best to purr with but I like the sand blasted crystal as it requiers very little conditioning and it cutts loud & yelps beautifully with any type of striker

I love a glass over aluminum,, its loud and I can switch off between a carbon striker and a wood striker to get different tones.

I prefer slate, with glass a close second, I also do well with crystal, aluminum is one I'm still playing with. My favorite striker is chestnut, acrylic would be second, I don't care much for carbon.
