Does anyone know of any In-state tanneries that will tan hides into garment quality leather???
My 8-year old is wanting me to trap him a 'coon and make him a coon-skin cap...ala Fess Parker style from Davey Crockett. Easy enough request....the only hard part is getting the hide properly shaved and tanned for the task. I was on USA Foxx & Furs website, they only charge $15 / coon plus another $4 if they flesh it out. That seems very reasonable to me...has anyone used them???
I just wasnt sure if there was anywhere locally to have this done or not?
Thanks for the info!

Have you ever thought of getting a home tanning kit and letting your boy help you make his cap? That way he can see how stuff is made from the furs you trap. Just an idea.

I have used usa foxx and had good service from them. the skins are tumbled soft and the price is right. For the 19.00 plus the shipping it would be hard to get the quality at home without quite a bit of work. Tha e skins have to bee tumbled or "broken as they dry otherwise they will be relly stiff and hard to work. There is a tannery and trading post in Auburn but I haven't used them. Their experience level didn't meet my requirements but you might look them up. I don't recall their name. Maybe someone on here can help.

I had thought about it Decatur...... the tanning isn't the problem, it's getting that skin shaved thin enough, and breaking it so it's totally soft and workable. I've tried it on buckskin and it's a CHORE breaking that hide! I think I'll go with USA Foxx....... thanks for the info HT.

I'm shipping the coyote skin that I killed during ML season today. They came highly recommended to me from a couple of different people.
