I hunt too hard to save a few dollars on a mount. I 'll take my trophy to the best taxidermast around no matter what he charges.
I'm gonna have a mount for at least 20 years. There ain't no way I'm gonna look at a bad mount for 20 years just to save $100!
I wish everyone would see it that way.
People need to go out and find a good taxi before they actually need one. Go look at their work, find out their charges, how they prep the hide for mounting whether it be tanning or the dry preservative, etc...... I'm not saying to take it to the most expensive by no means. Their may be someone that charges less and is better, but you'll never know if you don't shop around. Don't end up regreting your decision of who you took it too once you get it back. I agree. To mny times people don't have any idea what to do once they get their trophy. Gp out and look before or even during season at taxi's work amd compare a few. Look at the overall attitude of the deer-does it look relaxed or alert? Does the attitude fit the chosen mannikin pose? Small changes in skin placement around the eyes allows for different "looks"-alert, relaxed, aggresive, ect. Check the ear attitude and shape- are the edges straight and thin, again do they fit the attitude of the mnt. Does the taxi use bondo(not the best way) or liners? Bondo is a filler, not an adhesive- bondo ears will drum over time-with the adhesives available to our industry and the accurate liners available, liners can't be beat. The less organic tissue left in the mnt. the better. Check the back edge of the mnt., Does the hair roll around the back edge or does the hair splay every direction against the wall. All it takes is a couple minutes when placing the mnt. on a drying board to tuck the hair behind , then it dries that way and looks "clean". There are many other things to look for and I would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

I started charging $300 this year up from $275 last year. I've been at it 4 or 5 years now and I've just kept my prices the same as everyone else around.
I will say that unless a guy is doing "show" quality mounts for every guy that shows up, their prices should be in line with everyone else. I can't say that any price is unfair as people put a different value on their time and worth. I'm satisfied with the profit I make and I think I produce a nice mount. It isn't gonna win a blue ribbon at the State convention, but if you wanted to pay for the time required to do that, I be happy to take your money.....
I personally don't think price indicates the quality of the produced product. High price taxidermists usually are trying to keep away new business or are producing mounts that are above and beyone a normal mount for a limited number of customers. Some know that thier name will draw more money and therefore that is what their customers pay for. This isn't all higher priced taxidermists, but it is a lot of them. I order from the same catalogues and pay the same prices as they do. Overhead is basically the same for everyone.
I recommend taking a day and just dropping in to several of your local taxidermists's shops. We all usually have something on the wall that we have done. Check out the work and decide for yourself if price indicates quality. My door is always open ...... when I'm open that is.... ;D
