My wife's Cousin is a taxidermist. I've had him do a few plaque mounts but no shoulder mounts yet (nothing worth doing that yet). He does good work and only works for friends and family. My wife's his favorite cousin and he's always got a standing invitation to come to dinner even though he seldom does.

I take mine to Scott Ackeret of Wildlife Re-Creations in Seymour and it's $425 for a shoulder mount. Scott did an excellent job on my first deer mount and I'm having him do my first turkey mount right now too. I know he does a good job on everything I've seen because I drop in on him all the time during my lunch hour lol. It's pretty neat to see all the different critters he's got in there and he's a heckuva nice guy.

You get what you pay for.......I have two crappy mounts where the eyes are cracking where they filled in around them ,stitching separating etc. they were cheap 200.00 since then I pay 450.00 to have Larry Schmeltz who does great work in Tangier, In. Cheap is never better in my experience. I have six mounts. my da has two and my brother and nephew have a few by Larry that are pushing 15 years old and still look great. pay extra and get a good job.

I was in Hoosier Trapper's Supply yesterday....if you are gonna pay someone, their work is INCREDIBLE. The most awesome taxidermy studio I've ever seen...worth the trip to Greenwood just to check out their display mounts!

I have paid more and have paid less to get shoulder mounts done. You get what you pay for!! Cheaper ones had stiching come apart, nose cracked, etc. Higher priced one's are still perfect after 10 years. However, I found my new Taxi man and that is Dean at Coal Hollow. He does an incredible job !!! He has done a rack mount for my Dad and he is currently doing a European mount for my cousin on his first bow kill buck. Worth the drive for me........

Dean, did my deer and hog last year. He had my deer done in 9 months and he missed some time taking care of his sick mother. I took him the hog in March it was done the same time the deer was. He is a very nice man, too.
Bighorn, did you eat at the Beef House.

I take all my deer and turkeys down to Moore's Taxidermy in Paoli. He does some outstanding work, especially on turkeys. As far as prices, $265 on deer and $350 on turkeys. His turn around time is under 12 months.

Anthony Moore does some of the best work that I have seen. And is one of the most "Humble" Taxidermist that you will meet.

Around here, $255 will get you a really good shoulder mount and your deer back usually within 4 months. Very, very good work from an award winning taxidermist can be had for $350 and a longer turn around time. The only guy that I know that does a real good job on turkeys charges $375 for them.

Too funny about the D Y K E S......deertracks!!!! I'm not trying to take away business from the taxidermists out there...but I'm tellin' ya fellas..... It's not that hard to do your own buck. Van D Y K E S has a kit for $65! You can use a dry preserveative so you don't have the hastle of truly "tanning" the hide.....its very easy. If you can gut your buck than you can mount your own head! Don't be afraid to try it! Your right, it isn't that hard to MOUNT a deer. It IS hard to make a deer look great! When you use dry preservative you will get "drumming". The hide pulls away from the form, eyes, and ear liners (which you shouldn't use anyway...bondo is the best). I hunt too hard to save a few dollars on a mount. I 'll take my trophy to the best taxidermast around no matter what he charges. I'm gonna have a mount for at least 20 years. There ain't no way I'm gonna look at a bad mount for 20 years just to save $100! My taxidermist told me that he cost him over $50 a hour to run his shop. That is labor, utilities and rent. (2 full time employees & 2 part time). He has around 5 hours in each mount. Materials for the mount is pushing $100. As you can see he isn't making all that much on a $425 mount. If you have a deer that you want experiment with buy a deer mounting kit from Van Dyke's. It is fun to do!

I wish everyone would see it that way. People need to go out and find a good taxi before they actually need one. Go look at their work, find out their charges, how they prep the hide for mounting whether it be tanning or the dry preservative, etc...... I'm not saying to take it to the most expensive by no means. Their may be someone that charges less and is better, but you'll never know if you don't shop around. Don't end up regreting your decision of who you took it too once you get it back.
