Heres a couple pics of the European mount I did on my buck this year. Its pretty easy if you want to try it and it looks better then just the rack cut off IMO. Please post pics of yours if you have one.

What do you use to whiten it? Peroxide? Do you then coat it with anything to seal it? I need to do mine. I'll probably boil it first, then I need to figure out what to do next.

Mudstrider,
First you skin the head then boil it. Keep checking it and cutting off meat. This takes a few hours of boiling to get the head picked clean. Getting the brains out is a pain. Ounce you get the head clean of meat blow out the inside thru the big hole in the back of its head with a pressure washer. Be careful not to break off the nose pieces. Once its clean use 40 volume peroxide to coat the head. You can get this at a beauty supply store. Leave on a thick coat for a few hours then rinse with water. Do it again if its not white enough. Make sure when you boil the head you dont lose any teeth. If you do get them out of the pot and glue them back in. Also the lower jaw will fall off during the boiling. I recommend doing this job outside with an old pot. Good luck and post pics when its done.

Mudstrider...... Semi gave ya some good advice, one thing I would change though is to NOT boil the skull. Bring the water to a hot simmer, but keep it below a boil. Boiling breaks down the bone and you will get flaking if you aren't careful. Here's an alternative to Semi's way....like Grandpa says, "There's more than one way of choking a dog without feeding him bones."
Skin the head like semi said......then just soak the head in a 5 gallon bucket of water for a week or so. This soaking will soften up all the meat and make it much easier to get clean. After a week or so, scramble the brains and get as much "goo" out as you can with a coat hanger.........then go for the simmer in the pot. It's a time consuming process but it's worth the effort. I opted for regular 3% peroxide.......using 6 bottles at $1 each. I soaked it for 3 days and it's now in the process of drying in the sun and finishing the bleaching process. It looks awesome....just waiting a few days to make sure it's good and dry. The 40% peroxide will get the job done faster, but if you aren't in a hurry I'm sure the 3% stuff is cheaper. I'm also doing my mount with the lower jaw on as opposed to off like most you see. I'll get a pic on here in a few days.
Oh, to answer your question Mudstrider yes, you should "seal" it with something. Any spray epoxy will work......I'd go for a matte finish unless you are wanting a shiny look, which is fine also. You can also use a product called Deft which is a wood sealer that will work too. Then for the antlers rub them down with linseed oil or WD-40 to give them a soft gloss, but not too "wet"......

Gobbler..... I LOVE the mount with the barnwood with all the weeds!!! I've seen a TON of mounts and never seen anything quite like that. I've got mine to mount after waterfowl season is over, and I might just try to duplicate that background scene. VERY cool!!!!

Thanks for the compliment Travis. The Barnwood actually came from a barn on the farm the deer was shot on. I got all the dried weeds from fields and some at Hobby Lobby. Good Luck and be sure to post pics.

I have also heard of doing it this way and am curious to see the responses. A buddy of mine did this with one of his deer, but I don't know that he ever did anything else with it.
