I concur with RJS , it's your tag and you made the shot . You'll still be reporting the kill so that the data can be analyzed , and all of us will learn what it means to be a true sportsman . It isn't always easy , but doing the right thing is never wrong . I think you already knew that though ...  |

I voted no. Hunting is only utilized by states as a means to manage wildlife, control populations. The point is the state allows hunting to remove animals. The point is today states can not get enough animals such as deer removed. Now as long as you do not take anything from the deer, such as antlers then no do not tag it. Also who do you really think is going to waste a $24 tag on a deer they can not utilize.
So I guess to then if a hunter driving to his hunting location hits and kills a deer with his truck he should have to tag it as well.

I voted "not Sure" because I have mixed emotions on the topic.
My only concern is to know that this animal is noted in the harvest totals or taken away from the post season herd count at the end of the year. We all should take into consideration accurate data.

I voted YES..Also I see where cday voted no,so if I shoot let's say a small 6 point buck and don't like the size of it's rack or something else about the deer as long as I don't tag it I can just leave it lay and hunt for something bigger?  ?? Get real!!!!!!!!There are different laws regarding hitting a deer with your truck cday as well,one is this is considered a traffic accident and has nothing to do with hunting what so ever,no matter what time of year or day you hit it. |

This excellent thread reminds me of the time I shot 5 Squirrels, of which one lodged up in a tree and I was unable to retrive it. So I went home with four Squirrels when I actually bagged five. So on that day I got the legal limit of five Squirrels.

Well,
Why would you be recovering a deer if you don't plan to utilize it?
You shoot a doe at first light, track it all day, in 85+ degree heat....till you run out of light. Come back the next morning and track it till 1:pm....in 85+ degree heat.
You finally find it and its swelled twice its size....do you tag it?.....remember if you tag it you check it in....lol

You go Pheasant hunting. The bag limit is 2. You kill one put it in your game bag. Later one comes up at close range and instead of letting it get out away from you you bast it at ten yards. The bird is blown to bits with no usuable meat. You have no excuse as far as the recovery as it's right there in front of you. Do you count it as your limit and stop hunting or hide it in the grass somewhere and continue to hunt for another bird to complete your limit.
To me there is no difference between this and the deer. Both were kill by the hunter. If you go down the road of not tagging a deer that is not immediately recovered then how does one criticise farmers who shoots them and let them rot or hunters ground checking a deer that they did not know the sex or whether it met what they wanted to claim as there deer. What if the deer that is shot gets gut shot along with other wounds and is recovered by nightfall but still it smells and you know alot of meat is going to be waisted. You leave that one in the field? What if you think your shooting a doe but get to your kill and it has 4" spikes and now you have to use your buck tag, you leave that one? Where is ones ethics? Does the $24.00 change ones ethics?

Because it is illegal to **hunt** deer without the appropiate license.
The point is, why even look for it if it is sure to be ruined....unless you are taking the antlers off it....in that case...YES...... punch your tag, check the deer and take your antlers.

One that leaves you sick inside but as long as it was not a carelessly placed shot and you gave it your all in trying to recover it you owe no one any explanation.
