Hi, everybody.
My name's John and I just moved to Indiana from south central Kentucky back in the spring.
So far I've managed some squirrel hunting in the Clark State Forest near Henryville and have had splendid luck shooting a flat black Ruger M77/22 all weather rifle that's been zeroed to Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. That's a great small game setup, but the squirrels don't care for it one bit.
I'm mostly into upland game but have done some fairly serious waterfowling in the past. I'm really looking forward to trying out the grouse and woodcock, both of which were practically non-existant where I used to live. I would really like to do at least one pheasant hunt this fall, too. One of my old co-workers kept threatening to take me to his grandfather's place in northwest Illinois for pheasant several years ago but we never got around to it.
I recently bought a new CZ Canvasback 20 ga. O/U for use as a dedicated upland gun, but that's left me aware of the need for a new waterfowl gun. I had some poor experiences hunting ducks and geese in Kentucky and had gotten away from it for a few years. After talking with a few hunters up here I'm thinking things may be different enough to warrant giving it another go. I was in a gun shop just the other day and ran across an old Ithaca Mag-10 semi-auto. What a blast that would be! Of course, the cost of opening that extra full choke up or shooting bismuth shot would screw the whole affair up from an economic standpoint.
Some say I'm overly concerned with ethics and fair chase and so forth, but "bagging a limit" is far from the top of my to-do list. I've felt compelled to distance myself from some hunting buddies in the past when the limit grew more important to them than the hunt itself. Anybody else feel this way?
Anyone interested in maybe hooking up just shoot me a pm. It would be really nice to tag along with some locals because it's a pretty safe bet that I'm only scratching the surface of what Indiana has to offer.
Have a great weekend!
