It's been awhile, but if anyone remembers, my grandson Jake won a pheasant hunt offered by midwesthunter as a prize in the youth turkey target shooting contest last season. Jake and I had a pretty full schedule of hunts through Christmas of last year, so in agreement with midwesthunter, we decided to get the hunt in early this year. My snow plowing work kept getting in the way, but midwesthunter was patient with us and we finally managed to get together this past Saturday. We hunted at a pheasant preserve up in Bremen, IN where midwesthunter and his partner John had arranged a hunt with two other youths and their fathers. We were provided a great German short hair pointer named Dakota and his handler, whose name I regret not remembering. Hopefully, midwesthunter will fill in that blank for me. The weather was perfect with a light dusting of snow and snow falling as the hunt began. The dog did a great job of finding the birds which ended up being real strong flyer's. The ones that didn't fall to the gun ended up in the next county I believe. All the kids ended up with at least a couple birds apiece before the hunt ended about noon. I took a slew of pics, but unfortunately I can't locate the cable to down load to the comp, so they'll have to wait. midwesthunter filmed the whole thing, so maybe he'll have something to post. Jake had a ball shooting the birds and I got an even bigger kick watching him. Many thanks to midwesthunter for having us and the other youths as his guest and to H. I. for running the contest. With people like midwesthunter, his partner John, the staff of H. I. and all the members of this site endeavoring to provide opportunities for our youth, the future of hunting is bright indeed.

As I recall from watching Jake shoot at Atterbury during the Hunting-Indiana Homecoming last year the pheasants didn't have a chance. BTW - Midwesthunter is again donating a Pheasant Hunt as one of the Youth Turkey Target Shooting prizes.. huntingindiana.proboards52.com/index.cgi?board=turkey&action=display&thread=1200593542So everyone sign up your kid, nieces, nephews, grandkids, step kids, your neighbors kids, etc for the Hunting-Indiana.com Youth Turkey Target Shooting Contest. The youth of today ARE hunting's future.......

Well to start off the dogs handler was Dan Spronberg. And you couldn't of asked for a better dog/handler. One of the situations that impresed me was when the dog pointed a bird holding as we closed the distance. The bird started to try and sneak away. The dog slowly stalked the bird as it was walking/running. never busting point to chase the bird till the handler gave the comand to get it. I was impressed by all the kids gun handleing, and saftey. I was in the middle of the three boys, and I was nervouse as can be LOL, but didn't get Dick Chenneyed. LOL All boys worked well together for meeting for the first time. All of them sported a 20 gauge. Which as we all no can be a little light for a pheasant specialy if there flying straight away. But They proved they had what it took to make the shots. I think jake acomplished the hardest shot of the day. A bird flying from right to left and about 35-40 yards away. The other two boys took a crack at it and when it got down Jakes way He layed the smack down on it. Very impresive. As Woody said I am offering another hunt for the compitition. I also extended another invitation to Jake and Huxbux to join us for the hunt next year. I would also open the door for some other youths to join us, and don't be affraid to bring the girls out. Tis time of year seems to work good because the birds seem to fly better for some reason.

Some pics from the hunt...... midwesthunters partner John behind the camera Two typical hunters. Jake explaining that he always passes on a buck this size and midwesthunter mentioning how thirsty he is and claiming to have no change for the soda machine. The hunting area The weather In the stubble Locked up Dakota on point BIRD UP! The retrieve What's wrong with this picture? LOL.... Bucks family has an odd tradition. After every hunt, they "season" their hats by throwing them into the air and shooting them. Bet the hat makers love this tradition. The youths this hunt was all about: Buck, Jake, and Alex with their harvest.
