My 6yr old daughter can't wait to go hunting. She sits with me and watch the shows on the Outdoor Channel as well as a couple on PBS.
She knows exactly where the kill zone is on Whitetail deer, and turkeys ( She also wants to go Bear hunting).
I will probably take her with me this year to get her acquainted to sitting in a blind for hours at a time. This way she will be able to see if this is what she really wants to do.

Take her with ya.... I have been taking my daughter (5) out since squirrel hunting and deer and turkey scouting since she was almost 4..... I wanted to make sure she understood that the animal was going to die (remember to kids tv is not real only pretend) so in preparation for this I also made sure that she was exposed (much to the dismay of my wife) to deer that I had shot.... letting her see and touch them before they hung int he garage... and then letting her satisfy her curiosity by sneaking peeks at what I was doing with it while it was hung... skinning etc....
Long story short (I know too late) she knew full well what was going to happen to the animal... and this will be her first spring turkey hunting with me.... gonna take her a few times this deer season (early archery).... you will be surprised to find that you are probably as if not more excited than she is about going.

She already knows that they will die and has petted the dead deer before I hung it up. She also watched me hang it to the rafters, and she even looked inside the gut while it was spread open.
And she still wants to go.

What I did was take a deer antler and some turkey feathers out and drop it when they were not looking and they found it. My niece was young and she still has it this day many years later. By making it fun they enjoyed that day

......hey retiredmn1, just a suggestion, TURKEY SCOUTING AND TURKEY HUNTING behind a blind is a great way to introduce a youngster to hunting, driving around in state parks or fish and wildlife areas, just to see or photograph wildlife is great fun also.stop by the nature centers' is nice too!on scouting ,short trips are best with something to drink and a candy bar. while in a blind youngsters usually get sleepy, just let them take a nap. sorta go with idea "its going to be a fun day to be outdoors"..while in a blind it doesn't hurt to take a break and stand up and stretch your legs now and then..the good thing about blinds ,this will hide any movement and youngsters are a little fidgety...and turkeys have excellant eyes on movement. on weather ,try to pick a day that nice to be out there(no rain or wind),,you do not want any bad experiences, just good memories.....hope this helps ya and good luck......TAKE A YOUNGSTER ON YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE......turkey scout
