Special hunt aims to attract youngsters Outdoor notebook Special hunt aims to attract youngsters By Gary Garth Special to The Courier-Journal According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation the average hunter in the United States is a 41½-year-old white male. It's an aging demographic, and wildlife officials in Kentucky and beyond have made no secret of their need to recruit young hunters from a more diversified base. To boost opportunities for young hunters and potential hunting youngsters the Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a Free Junior Small Game Hunting and Trapping Week tomorrow through Jan. 1. The special hunt will be open for any legal game animal except waterfowl, said John Morgan, a biologist for the state game agency. Youngsters also will be allowed to use a modern firearm, muzzleloader, bow or crossbow for deer Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Tomorrow through Friday deer can be hunted with archery gear as part of the archery season that continues through Jan. 16. "Kids can hunt or trap small game (tomorrow) through January 1 with no licenses or permit, but all bag limits and other regulations do apply," Morgan said. "And they can use a modern firearm to hunt deer during the weekend." Children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. The adult will need the appropriate license and/or permit unless license exempt. For more information contact the Department of Fish and Wildlife at (800) 858-1549, online at fw.ky.gov or check the current hunting and trapping guide. www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051225/SPORTS09/512250391/1002/SPORTS
