I heard somewhere that it might be illegal for youth to hunt on public property during the Sept. youth deer hunt where bonus antlerless licenses are not allowed. The reasoning was because youth are only allowed to harvest antlerless deer, and thus wouldn't be allowed to hunt where bonus tags aren't allowed.
While many public properties do not allow bonus tags, they do allow antlerless deer to be taken by muzzleloader and archery. Since youth are allowed to use any weapon except handguns and rifles, why then would they not be allowed to harvest antlerless deer on any public property that allows deer hunting?
IF they are only allowed to hunt on said public property with muzzleloader or archery, and NOT shotgun because of the bonus permit regulation that is in effect during the regular firearms season in November; why isn't it specified thus in the hunting regulations?
I understand that during the regular season, youth and lifetime license holders must follow all the bag limits and regulations, just as if they were buying seperate tags for each deer. For instance, a youth license holder could only harvest 2 does with a shotgun in Hamilton county during firearms season, because Hamilton county only allows two bonus tags.
So here is my impression of the regs: The Sept. Youth deer hunt is a two-day, antlerless only "season" where they can take ONE deer that is in addition to any other deer taken later during the deer season. Which leads me to believe that the November firearms Bonus antlerless deer license rules do not apply.
Sorry for the rambling, but I guess what I'm after is whether or not the CO's here know that this is documented somewhere, or is it an issue that must be left to the local CO's interpretation and opinion? If it is the later, I hope you understand how frustrating this can be for the average hunter!
