This summer I talked to a CO briefly about some new regulations concerning turtles. Could you expand on them regarding species and possesion. Seems like you cant posses them anymore. And what do you do if you have some shells that you got before the new regs? Seems like there is a blackmarket for these as I was told by the CO and thats what got the new rules implemented. Thanks for the clarification. Brad

Stykbow,
You are partially right, you may possess common snapping turtles, spiny soft shell turtles and smooth soft shell turtle with in the season and bag limit. These are the only species of turtles that have a taking season/possession in Indiana. If you have say an eastern box turtle shell, we were giving free permits to possess them during a grace period. I would suggest contacting the conservation officer in you area if you have any old shells (you may possess the shells of the three turtles I mentioned). If you were reffering to eastern box turtles being taken and sold on the black market pet trade then you were correct, they may not be taken. The population was declining at a very high rate due to this trade. An officer in my district stoped two guys from Florida with over fifty box turtles about eight years ago. At the time there was no law protecting the box turtle so they were not breeaking any laws. The turtles were being sold mostly to asia as pets. We have since put a great deal of time into protecting these resources.
