Guide Charged with Leading Illegal Hunts in CO and MO
Denver Post 3/21, 2006
A Missouri hunting guide who allegedly led illegal hunts and killed and discarded numerous animals in Colorado and Missouri over a five-year period has been charged with 22 counts of hunting violations, including 8 felonies. Two of his hunting clients also face multiple charges.
Gregory Jaegers, 40, who owned Renegade Guide Service in Ste. Genevieve, MO, allegedly operated without a guide license and took elk, deer, bear, turkeys and a mountain lion before a team of wildlife investigators from three states put together a case against him.
The investigation into the hunting activities of Jaegers and clients and co-defendants Richard W. Schroeder, 45, of Festus, MO, and Kevin Schweiss, 47, of Bloomsdale, MO, began in 2003, when wildlife agents in Colorado and Missouri were tipped off by agents in Wyoming that an illegal Missouri-based hunting business might be operating in Colorado. The three were indicted earlier this month.
During the lengthy investigation, four other hunting clients of Jaegers were charged with wildlife violations and paid fines and penalties. Additional defendants are expected to be charged.
