The wife is telling me we need to get one of those vac sealers for packaging deer and game. I always use gallon zip loks, squeeze the air out and have not had any problems.
Anybody use one? How do you like it? How does cost compare to zip loks? Is it slow? Any downside?

It all depends on how long you intend to keep it in the freezer. A vacuum machine definatly has the advantage as far as keeping the game fresh for exdended stays in the freezer, but if you eat it quickly then there shouldn't be much of an issue. We wrap all our cuts in butchers paper, and they seem to hold up well. I've eaten meat that has been wraped for over a year and was still good, not dried out.

I just got a new Food Saver top of the line model and haven't used it yet but will today. I butcher between 5-10 deer every year and use butcher paper for all the cuts. Butcher paper works great. Its the freezer that makes the difference. A freezer with de-humidifying fan will dry out your meat and cause freezer burn quicker than one that doesn't have a fan. I got a small 5 cubic foot freezer a few years ago like the ones you get a Walmart for 150.00 with no fan and it keeps meat in great shape for well over a year using butcher paper. If i use the freezer on my refrigerator with a fan the meat will start to burn in 6 months or less.
The vacuum packer i got for bird breast and breakfast sausage and cuts of meat i know i wont use for a while. Ive had to throw away several breasts because they burned in the freezer using zip lock bags.
The video that came with my Food Saver says you can keep vacuum packed meat for up to 3 years and still be good. h.h.

We use one, and it's great. The bags can be washed and re-used, but we never do. You can save a lot of space in your freezer, plus get things frozen solid faster with them little flat packages!

The one we use we got at WalMart. Sorry, I don't remember price or name. It was the best one they had tho if that helps? We use the rolls of bag material and make our own bags. You waste a lot less, and can make them fit about anything.

Based on the responses here, I think I'll stick with the bags. $119 will buy a lot of bags and some brewskies to drink while butchering.
