I'm having a bit of trouble with my pointing dog, she wants to "go catch" the bird, flushing it in the process, before I can flush the bird. It seems like she thinks I'm going to get it before she does and she wants it first. Any ideas on how to get her to "whow"

How old is the dog? If it's a pup, chasing is a natural instinct. Most pup's light comes on when they realize they can't catch...that's when the pointing comes in.
Some pups point right off the bat and are steady.

Did she hold point through training? Is this something that developed after you started working her off of a check cord? Usually you see this when going to live bird training or transitioning off of the check cord in training. Alot of young dogs will hold solid all day off a cord on scent only but once they get introduced to live birds they start breakin on sight. Bottom line is you should always maintain control of the dog. The dog can't flush the bird if you don't allow it. More than likely a little more time spent on live birds with the dog on a check cord should show some improvement.
