I have a question for you bird dog owners or know a trainer who might know this. How old is to old to start trainng a Britt. ? I know of a male Brittany about 18 months and never been worked with at all, is he to old to start? I know about the flask point thing with a wing, he was doing this some at 8weeks old but sold to a non hunting lady, should I just forget this dog at all.

You need him to be crazy about birds. You need to get him on some birds and see how he acts.If it were me I would worry more about being gun shy.Take it slow and start at the begining.

The dog is not too old. I know of someone who rescued a three year old Brittany and it turned into a fine hunting dog.
It would be helpful if you knew where the dog came from...most Brittanys come from hunting stock.
If mamma hunts and daddy hunts, pup will hunt.
There is a lot of good reading out there on how to train a bird dog..just have patience.

Took out a one+ year old Llewellin Setter last week who had been ignored all last season. First bird I planted the dog locked up TIGHT and held until we flushed the bird. Same deal on the second bird except we purposely did not flush the bird. After about 3 minutes of a rock steady point we couldn't stand it any longer and flushed the bird for him. He's going to be just fine. A little obedience and a lot of birds and he'll be a great gun dog.
