I have read as much as I could find on this subject. There are thousands of walk in acres to hunt, and if you do enough research you will find the cost is unbeatable. I will leave x-mas day for a 5 day hunt. The license is $110 for 10 days which must be used in two different 5 day periods, a license bought after Dec 15 is good for part of the following year and there are places to stay for right at $40 per day. The worst part is the drive and gas cost. I would like to know if they have many quail or chukkar or anyother game birds to hunt. But if you mention SD all you hear about are the pheasant.

just got home from S Dakota and what a time. saw well over a 1000 birds per day and what a beautiful place. at this time of year (late season) there are alot more hens then roosters but still plenty of birds. would like to put the word out that next year will be going back and would like to get a couple of guys to go. my young dog did great in the praire grass but the food plots are more for group hunting. first food plot we hunted was crazy with birds flushing everywhere. also being the late season only saw 2 other hunters.

One of the guys on another board just got back from South Dakota and didn't kill a bird. Depends on where you go and how you hunt I think.

The western part of SD had a big drought this spring and early summer and most of the chicks didn't survive and the bird numbers were way down. The eastern part had ideal rain and they had normal bird numbers as usual. I went alone and didn't have alot of luck in the food plots because the birds just run to the far end then flush. I took a very young dog 9 months and she did a great job for her age. She pointed a hundred birds a day and most were hens. I shot every rooster she pointed. If I can get a few people to go next year and drive the food plots there is no doubt that everyone will limit out within an hour. I like going late in the year and not having a 100 hunters to deal with. Yes, alot of birds have already been taken but believe me there are still plenty of birds.
