Blue Grass offers younger hunters first shot at doves
PHIL POTTER, Tri-State Outdoors Sunday, August 27, 2006
Friday, which is Sept. 1, ushers in dove season - arguably the favorite among Tri-State hunters. Any public fish and wildlife area harboring at least a few hundred birds is eagerly used - so much so that it's rare to have more than three days of good gunning all season long.
Areas such as Indiana's Blue Grass Fish and Wildlife Area stagger hunting days and manage to keep a good dove population around a bit longer. Blue Grass permits upland hunting only on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Because the dove opener falls on Friday, the birds are off-limits until Saturday.
But as an initial trial run, Evansville and Warrick chapters from Waterfowl USA, The Wild Turkey Federation and Ducks Unlimited have petitioned Blue Grass for a special youth hunt. It will allowhunters age 17 and under to have first crack at the resource.
All youth hunters must have a Hunter Safety Certificate, hunting license, gun and shells and adhere to bag limits and other state restrictions. They also need an adult to accompany them during the hunt.
Accompanying adults will not be able to shoot - their turn comes on Sunday.
Youth hunters must register by Wednesday, Aug. 30. For details, call Buck's 'N Jake's Outfitters at 812-897-4285 or Sugar Ridge FWA at 812-789-2724.
The youth hunt, from 2 p.m. until sunset, will be supervised by Conservation Officer Eric Stamps and adult volunteers.
When Blue Grass FWA reverts to its regular schedule on Sept. 3, adults and kids may hunt together for the remainder of the season.
