Bird numbers were down dramatically just about everywhere in the state last year. The dove crop looked very good 2 weeks before the opener and then the birds cut out for some reason. I know Roush lake sucked and everyone I talked to that hunted Salamonie and Pigeon River said the same thing. If I remember correctly most of the state properties only harvested about half of what they did the previous year ('04).

Tri-County also requires steel shot in some of their feilds. They have a couple feilds to the south that you have to us steel shot. Charlie

I got two un's like I posted at Kankakee, BUT my buddys wife misplace his card and when he findly found it he got pick ( 7) Kankakee Sept. 1.. I see a lot of dead doves!!
Just a reminder to all of you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take pleanty of water and more water!!!!!! If you must take your dog in the early season dove hunting take more water!!!!! I made a large umbrella shade cover by taking PVC pipes and cut them into 18" sections and put them together with conecters as high as you want. I push a steal rerod in the ground and build it high enought to be high over my head but give a shaded area. Used a black, umbrella and added green&brown. Carrys easy in the bucket with my dove decoys, Made a tree to hold the decoys in the feild the same way. 18" sections and build a tree about 12 ft high, with side bars to clip the decoys on. A few years ago at Kankakee there was a guy died walking out of the feild because of the heat..By the time you think you may be in trouble , YOU ARE!!! Hunt safely!! Hunt again!! Charlie

Oh by the way these numbers are all listed in the Indiana Hunting & trapping guide that is FREE at hundreds of places across Indiana. These are the same guide book you can get the cards to send in for these drawing and give you a guide to some of the hunting regs.and fees.

Checked the fields at Salamonie today and it doesn't look good. Many of them have small, underdeveloped sunflowers and huge ragweeds. I saw only a few birds and very spotty. It is a toss up whether I hunt or not.
