A friend of mine just had to put down his family dog. The dog was getting up in age and came down with cancer.
I know a lot of us reach that point and words mean little to console.
I found this and I think it is very soothing to someone that is putting down a pet..
A Dog's Prayer.
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand; Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears, You'd not want me to suffer so, The time has come please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend And please stay with me until the end, Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see, The kindness that you did for me Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve, it must be you Who has this painful thing to do, We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

This excellent post says it all. Just last week we had to put-down our 14 yr. old Black Lab due to a cancerous tumor on her liver.

Dang Woody-That prayer nearly has me bawling. I know it`s a part of living, and I have NO problems with me going, but to see pets go, it`s just almost too much to bear.

My condoleneces on the loss of your good friend, deertracks.... Thank you very much Woody. You put a lump in my throat & caused my eyes to water by mentioning "good friend". It took me back to the first day we met, as she was the only one out of the whole litter that came to the kennel fence to greet me & the wife. She stole our hearts as both of us felt that she was saying, please take me home with you.
